Full Job Description
The Space Telescope Science Institute (STScI) is the operational home of the Hubble Space Telescope, the new James Webb Space Telescope, and the future Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope, along with ever-growing data archives and public outreach. Our world-class astronomical research center is based on the Johns Hopkins University Homewood campus in Baltimore, MD. This position can support hybrid work. Candidates must reside in or be willing to relocate to our local market.
The Space Telescope Science Institute (STScI) invites applications for a postdoctoral researcher position to work with Dr. Nor Pirzkal, Dr. Russell Ryan, and a team of US and international collaborators in order to contribute to some of the following: physical processes in star-forming galaxies at redshifts 1-12
(https://ui.adsabs.harvard.edu/abs/2021jwst.prop.2079F/abstract), low mass stars in the Milky Way, and general analysis of wide-field slitless spectroscopy. This project will primarily focus on analyzing JWST wide-field slitless spectroscopy obtained with NIRCam and NIRISS of various programs, including NGDEEP, CEERS, and PEARLS.
The successful applicant will benefit from the career mentoring program at STScI, interactions with STScI and Johns Hopkins University research staff, and a stimulating work environment rich in colloquia, journal clubs, symposia, and learning opportunities related to the missions supported by STScI. Part of the time may be available for independent research or new projects in related areas. The nominal start date is expected to be in February 2023. The initial appointment is for two years, with an expected renewal for a third year, subject to satisfactory performance and availability of funding.
STScI offers an excellent benefit package, competitive salaries, and a stimulating work environment. The starting salary is commensurate to the year of Ph.D. Explore the amazing benefits.
Any questions about the position should be directed to Nor Pirzkal (npirzkal@stsci.edu)
Applicants shall hold a Ph.D. degree in Astronomy, Physics, Planetary Science, or related fields at the start of the position. Expertise in one or more of the following areas is desirable: (a) Wide field slitless spectroscopy and photometry; (b) data analysis from space-based observatories; (c) studies of star-forming galaxies; (d) programing in a Unix environment and proficiency with OSX systems as well as Linux. More important is the willingness to take on new projects, learn new skills, lead and contribute to scientific publications, and work independently to bring these projects to fruition.
